LITTLE DEATH
Songs of Coming and Going

Conceived by and starring Nightlife, MAC and Bistro Award-winner Karen Kohler

Directed by John-Richard Thompson

“Sex and Death” – Tuesday, November 18 @ 9 PM

Tickets: $25 and $40

In this new musical performance the cabaret iconoclast Karen Kohler blurs the line between sex and death in two companion shows.  Backed by a five-piece ensemble, Kohler crossbreeds a decadent range of theatrical and musical styles, everything from jazz, Delta blues, classical, rock-folk and cabaret.  She takes us in and out of pain and pleasure, obsession and foreplay, creation and destruction.  Using the words and music of composers as varied as Purcell, Tom Waits, Schubert, Cole Porter, Astor Piazzola, Jacques Brel and Leonard Cohen, Little Death shows us how sex and death are distinct, the same and totally inevitable.  Two entrancing, seductive evenings . . . Or try them both in one dazzling evening.  After all, you can't have one without the other!

THE HIDERS
with Amy Miles

Wednesday, November 19 @ 10:00 PM

Tickets: $15

"A truly remarkable band, a great live experience, tons of great songs.  The Hiders bridge the musical gap as well as any band I've heard in a long, long time." - Dan Reed WXPN/WorldCafe
The Hiders formed in 2004, an outlet for former Ass Ponys & Ruby Vileos guitarist Billy Alletzhauser’s solo material which had been gestating for nearly a decade prior. The band was a local success instantly and international attention shortly followed thanks to the release of their debut recording Valentine, which received considerable airplay on commercial and non-commercial radio. Their sophomore release, Penny Harvest Field, brings some new and seasoned members to the band, as well as a more dynamic sound.  Stepping out of the easily tagged Americana formula of Valentine, Penny Harvest Field delivers influences ranging from The Raincoats and Husker Du to John Lennon and Elliott Smith while offering a deeper look into their Americana/Folk roots as well.

AMY MILES
Amy Miles is a New York based singer and songwriter who left Conway, Arkansas right after she finished high school to move to New York City in a pick up truck. Abandoning her training in classical music which her parents - both classical musicians - had hoped that she would pursue, Amy began acting, recording pop music, and producing new projects in the big city.

As a solo musician Amy Miles has recorded three records "Dirty Stay Out," featuring the single "Kill To Know" with a video directed by The State's David Wain, and an appearance by Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler. The roller skating themed video was a Youtube sensation. Amy's second record "Nobel Hatch," garnered critical acclaim including The Washington Post's praise of her song writings as both "Cutting and Smart," and providing her with a featured appearance performing on the Jimmy Kimmel show. Amy has toured with They Might Be Giants and opened for Robyn Hitchcock. Her third record "King of Girls" was produced by Craig Wedren of Shudder To Think, and is expected to be released later this year.

In addition to her solo music, Amy Miles is also a member of the Disco-Punk band "Baby," she is a performer with New York institution "The Losers Lounge," and the high concept musical collective "Citizens Band," which also includes Rain Phoenix, The Cardigans' Nina Persson, super model Karen Elson, and Guiding Light's Ian Buchanan.

PUNCH & JUDY

Friday, November 21, 2008 @ 10:30 PM

$15.00

New York jazz duo Punch & Judy, comprised of brassy chanteuse Jennifer Tullock and up and coming blues conscenti Kyle Hughes, are one of New York's newest buzz-chats.  The couple met in 2007 and began writing original jazz songs that incorporated Tullock's comedy background (a seasoned singer/comedy writer whose work has been featured at Second City Chicago and the news satire Tangy Pepper, many have compared her lyrics to that of Danny Kaye and Eartha Kitt) and Hughes's sterling reputation as a jazz and blues forerunner.  Songs such as "The Rock Hudson Blues", a Tin Pan Alley throwback chronicling the woes of a woman who falls in love with "sensitive" men, have garnered Punch & Judy attention in jazz, cabaret, and comedy circles alike.  The duo, along with their band, hold a residency at the Lower East Side's Tapeo 29, Failte Bar, Brooklyn's infamous jazz house the Tea Lounge, as well as acting as the in-house band for the New York radio satire "The Out of Hand Radio Hour."  The energy is young, the tunes are clever, and Tullock and Hughes continue to solidify their place as one of jazz and blues’ most promising new acts.

To use the twirling of burlesque performers' tassels to hypnotize the populace into submission (not the most ludicrous in the history of the 007 franchise!).  But P.I.N.C.H.B.O.T.T.O.M. will soon discover that The Twirl is Not Enough - because (an unlicensed parody of) James Bond is back.  And this time, he has a "License to Pinch" in this undercover extravaganza.  Starring Nasty Canasta as "James Bond" and Jonny Porkpie as her arch-nemesis "Porkfeld", plus a cadre of superspies, double agents, and villainous henchgals: Anita Cookie, Bastard Keith, Clams Casino, Delirium Tremens, Doc Wasabassco, GiGi La Femme, Jo Boobs, Julie Atlas Muz, Naughtia Nice, Neil O'Fortune, Peekaboo Pointe, Scott Rayow and Tigger!

Many, many moons ago, when 42nd Street was still lined with small theatres and large porn shops . . . two young actors started working on a show that would change . . . well, nothing really. But it did take them places . . . to the US Comedy Festival in Aspen, where they won the jury award for best sketch comedy! To Los Angeles, where they had lots and lots of very important meetings! And eventually, back to home to New York, where they played to sold out crowds at the Actors’ Playhouse! And . . . that was about it. Until now!

Jason Kravits and Joel Hurt Jones are dusting off the cobwebs and digging up the party hats for a one night only extravaganza! Comedy! Music! Ice Cream! Wrestling! Come see what all the fuss is . . . er, was . . . about!

Jason Kravits, most recently seen on Broadway in The Drowsy Chaperone, is probably best known for his work on television as ADA Richard Bay on ABC’s “The Practice.” He also did some other TV stuff, a couple of movies and lots of theatre. He performs semi-regularly with Don’t Quit Your Night Job, and created and stars in the web-series “Lords of the Playground.”

Joel Jones is a veteran actor/writer/director who has appeared on stages across the country, in numerous television shows (“Law & Order,” “Scrubs,” “Judging Amy,” etc.) in several films (Rat Race, Showtime, Our American Husband, etc.) and many commercials. He has written professionally for television and extensively for the stage, mostly sketch comedy.  Peeling Figs, a one-act Joel directed for Mind the Gap, was recently nominated for a New York Innovative Theatre Award.

“The Saint came marching in and absolutely killed . . . It's not every artist who could pull off a transition from AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ to Al Jolson's ‘Swanee.’  Or have medleys of Weill-Brecht and the Smiths. Plus, anybody who does a song from ‘Bugsy Malone’  is going to win me over automatically. Excellent backing by Kitten's Kiss!”
—Tom Nondorf, “The Leading Men,” Playbill Online.

Back to score another triumph at The Zipper —legendary troubadour Jason St. Little as TITS FISHER is back out on artistic parole and anyone is fair game to TITS.   Part Vaudeville, part Dada, and all rock and roll, JASON ST. LITTLE as TITS FISHER with KITTEN’S KISS - A Cabaret Voltaire is a mad triptych through the mind of one of our most beloved show biz figures.  Taking a cue from Tristan Tzara and the New York Dolls, TITS FISHER attempts to decipher the current state of our lost world with bravery, bon mots, and a healthy dose of synth and bass.  Radical chic exists, and the party is over circa 1985.  Visit www.titsfisher.com.

Musical Direction by Billy Hough
With Musicians Susan Goldberg, Paul Hough, jon fried and deena shoskes

Hipster horoscopists and cosmic musical comedians, Stella Starsky + Quinn Cox take to the stage with their new seasonal celebration, chronicling the real-magical lives of these "slick stargazers" (CNN) and "favored astrologers of fashion insiders" (ELLE) who were brought up by age-old mystical families, the antithesis of those whom conspiracy theorists suspect rule the world (and they'd be half-right). "A word-of-mouth phenomenon" (TIME) whose work has been called "brilliant and sexy" (VOGUE) and "wonderfully dirty" (O, The Oprah Magazine), Starsky + Cox are modish metaphysicians who reveal universal truths in the hilarious retelling of their personal tale.  Forever following their own star, the statuesque Starsky and her compressed consort Cox belt out songs, amid witty and mind-bending patter, in a signature sophisticated style that is at turns folky, loungey, punky and scroungey. The Yule, they'll have us know, is an ancient Norse word meaning “Wheel,” the mandala of the zodiac by which they truly and comically conduct their lives, oh, and yours.

“A thoroughly winning musical with a terrific, first-rate score!” (2006)
- Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

“GrooveLily rocks in the new year!” - Mike Kuchwara, The Associated Press

This Zipper holiday tradition returns!  Take a hip trip with the indie pop-rock band GrooveLily as they spread some holiday warmth on cold winter nights performing their critically acclaimed musical, Striking 12.  Combining pop-rock, musical comedy and old-fashioned uplift with a healthy dose of 21st-century skepticism, Striking 12 is the story of a Grumpy Guy who decides to avoid the hectic, loveless world on New Year's Eve, until he’s visited by an incandescent salesgirl with the promise to chase away his winter doldrums.  Starring GrooveLily band members Gene Lewin (drums/vocals), Brendan Milburn (keyboards/ vocals) and Valerie Vigoda (electric violin/vocals).  Striking 12 is written by Brendan Milburn (book, music and lyrics), Tony Award winner Rachel Sheinkin (book and lyrics) and Valerie Vigoda (book, music and lyrics).
